” Participating in Joan’s family dynamics/ psychodrama workshop was a profoundly impactful experience for me. In just an hour of witnessing my family of origin dynamics play out before me, I was able to gain more insight and embodied awarenesses about my childhood than I had in years of therapy. I opened my heart to a level of compassion for my child self in a way I hadn’t had access to prior to this experience. This led to a deepening of my ability to witness myself more clearly. I also accessed compassion for the common humanity within each family we got to experience. Joan led with a genuine heart and intuitive wisdom that helped me to create a new sense of hope in how I choose to live my life now moving forward. I highly recommend this work to anyone who is wanting to expedite their healing.”

Family Dynamics:

  • Identify something in your family of origin that had a negative impact on you.
  • In the safety of the container, direct others to play out this drama so you can see it from a distance.
  • Allow the feelings that come up for you as part of the healing process. Especially feelings that you were not able to feel at that earlier time.
  • See and feel what you wished would have happened if your family had acted in a way that would have felt better for you.

Psychodrama:

  • Take Two: With your awareness of what you wished your family had done instead, share with each of the characters representing you and the other players, how you want them to be in this new movie that you are making now. A new movie of your past.
  • Watch as your “family” acts out this alternate movie that can replace the old movie, or at least rest beside the old movie.
  • Experience what feelings are present as you watch and live into this new alternative reality.

In these two days we will explore our family dynamics; our early history that gave us our initial energetic imprint and nervous system pathways/ wiring. These early experiences set the stage for our feelings about ourselves, about others, and about life in general. It gave us our early attitudes, beliefs, and how we view the world, as friendly (or not) by watching how our parents (or caregivers) interacted with each other and with us.

These dynamics set the tone for how we love, how we communicate, how safe or unsafe we feel, and the sense of our “worth” mirrored by how we were treated by those around us.

You will do a dynamic family sculpture from your young life, either using the general tenor you felt day to day, or using a challenging situation that left a strong imprint on your developing soul. We will choose others in the class to represent various members of your family, so that we can re-create the experience. The scene will start as a “sculpture”, with each person in a particular place. You will share with each character their “role”, what they say, and how they act, so that you can then watch the scene as it unfolds.

This peek into each other’s past gives us a deepened awareness and compassion for our self, and for each other. It is essential for us to understand our self first; to track how we became who we were and are, so we can more easily track who we are becoming.

In Psychodrama we avail ourselves of our natural knowing of what we need and want, and we create a new movie. This new movie is very powerful. It gives us a new template, new creative options of what is possible, and jumpstarts our creativity.

The movie of our “beautiful dangerous assignment” continues to evolve. Our assignment is born from our history, especially the experiences that were challenging to us. The patterns that we inherited from our family, our culture, and our lineage are the ones that we have an opportunity to redo, rewire, and revamp with new, inspired, creative, pleasurable and entertaining possibilities.
